Dry Needling for Pain and Injury Management
Servicing Holmview & Logan City regions
Dry needling is a targeted treatment that helps relieve both short- and long-term pain. Research shows it can provide faster and more effective results than massage, stretching, TENS, compression techniques, conventional rehabilitation, superficial dry needling, and friction massage
The technique involves inserting fine, solid needles (similar to those used in acupuncture) into specific muscle trigger points (knots). This helps the muscle relax, improves movement, and restores normal, pain-free function.
Many people experience noticeable relief soon after treatment, making dry needling a highly effective option for reducing muscle pain and tension.
Dry Needling vs. Acupuncture: What’s the Difference?
Although dry needling and acupuncture use similar fine needles, they are very different treatments.
Dry Needling
Dry needling is based on modern anatomy, physiology, and pain science. It focuses on relaxing your muscles so you can move with less pain. The needle is placed directly into tight or irritated muscle spots – often called trigger points – to release tension, improve movement, and reduce discomfort.
Acupuncture
Acupuncture is a traditional treatment based on Chinese Medicine. Needles are placed along specific pathways (meridians) to support the body’s energy flow and overall balance. It’s commonly used for broader health concerns such as stress, sleep issues, digestion, headaches, and general wellbeing.
Benefits of Dry Needling
- Fast pain relief – Dry needling can quickly reduce muscle pain and tension by releasing tight “knots” in the muscle. Many people feel immediate or same-day improvement.
- Frees up stiff or restricted movement – By relaxing tight muscles, dry needling helps you move more easily – whether that’s turning your head, lifting your arm, bending, or walking without discomfort.
- Reduces muscle tightness and spasms – It helps calm overactive muscles, reducing spasms and the “locked up” feeling that often causes ongoing pain.
- Speeds up healing and recovery – Improved blood flow and muscle relaxation support faster recovery from injury, overuse, or training-related soreness.
- Helps treat stubborn or long-term pain – Dry needling often works well for pain that hasn’t responded to stretching, massage, or other therapies.
- Supports better posture and alignment – Releasing tight muscles can ease strain patterns, helping your body move more naturally and comfortably.
- Enhances the results of rehabilitation – When combined with exercise and hands-on therapy, dry needling can make rehab more effective by reducing pain and making movement easier.
- Can improve sports performance – Athletes often use dry needling to address tightness and restore full muscle function, helping them perform at their best.
What conditions can dry needling help with?
Dry needling can help with most physical pain conditions including, but not limited to:
- Muscle tightness and knots
- Sports injuries
- Neck, shoulder, and back pain
- Headaches and jaw tension
- Sciatica and glute pain
- Overuse injuries (e.g., typing, lifting, training)
Dry Needling Frequently Asked Questions
Is Dry Needling Right for You?
If your pain hasn’t improved with other treatments, dry needling might help. Most people find it comfortable and notice good results, especially when used alongside other types of care.
If you have a condition that affects bleeding or feel very anxious about needles, dry needling might not be the best choice. In that case, we’ll use other effective hands-on treatments to help you get lasting pain relief.
Does dry needling hurt?
Does dry needling hurt?
Most people feel only a quick, mild sensation when the needle enters the muscle. You may feel a brief twitch or ache. This is normal and often means the muscle is releasing. Many people describe the treatment as surprisingly comfortable.
How quickly will I feel results?
Many people notice relief immediately or within a few hours. Others feel improvement over the next day or two as the muscle relaxes and inflammation settles.
Will I feel sore afterward?
Some people feel mild, temporary soreness similar to post-exercise muscle ache. This usually settles within 24-48 hours. Light movement, stretching, and hydration help.
How many appointments will I need?
The number of follow up appointments needed will be dependent on the severity of your condition and your response to treatment. We will only see you for the minimum number of sessions needed to get rid of your pain. On average we see our patients 3 – 6 times.
How long are appointments?
Allow 45-60 mins for your initial appointment which includes your assessment and treatment. Subsequent sessions are typically 30 minutes but some conditions may require longer.
Can I claim Private Health Rebates?
Yes. You can claim rebates for myotherapy and dry needling provided you have Myotherapy or Remedial Massage included in your extras. We have a HICAPS machine to claim instant rebates from your health insurer. For self claiming purposes we email an invoice.
What do I wear?
Apart from dry needling, we treat through clothing. Therefore, wear loose, comfortable clothing such as shorts, tracksuit pants, singlets or t-shirts. No tight fitting cloths such as jeans.
