Neck Pain Got You in a Headlock! It Doesn’t Have to Be!
Neck pain can be both debilitating and uncomfortable, especially when it radiates from the neck to the shoulders. About one-third of the population will experience neck pain each year, and if left untreated, it can worsen. In severe cases, surgery may even become necessary.
The neck plays a crucial role in everyday movement, and sharp pain can severely disrupt your daily life. Whether it’s making it hard to sit up straight at work or preventing you from bending your head to tie your shoes, myotherapy can provide the relief you need. Every year, many people find relief from neck pain through myotherapy, and Logan Myotherapy is committed to helping you achieve the same.
Understanding Neck Pain
Neck pain can occur for a variety of reasons. It usually starts at the base of the skull, runs down to the shoulder blades, and settles in the back of the neck. The pain can range from a constant, dull ache to sharp, stabbing sensations. Other symptoms include:
- Stiffness and tightness in the upper body muscles
- Numbness or tingling in the arms or hands
- Headaches
- Discomfort when staying in one position too long
- Arm weakness
- Difficulty sleeping due to pain
- Trouble standing or sitting up straight
Common Causes of Neck Pain
Neck pain is often caused by injuries or damage to the tissues or bones in the neck. However, certain degenerative conditions can also contribute to painful necks. Here are some common causes:
Injuries.
Whiplash is a common neck injury, often resulting from car accidents or high-impact sports. It causes the head to jerk back and forth rapidly, damaging the soft tissues in the neck. This type of injury, known as a “strain,” is one of the leading causes of neck pain.
Illnesses.
Certain diseases, such as rheumatoid arthritis, meningitis, or cancer, can lead to chronic neck pain.
Torticollis
Torticollis is a common neck complaint. It occurs when neck muscles spasm, causing the neck to twist to the side. It is not associated with previous neck injuries.
Nerve Compression.
A herniated disc or narrowing of the foramen (the opening where nerves exit the spine) can compress the nerves branching out from the spinal cord. This may cause pain to radiate from the neck down to the hands and fingers, a condition known as “radiculopathy.”
Muscle Strain.
Overusing the neck muscles can lead to strain. Simple activities like sitting at a desk all day with poor posture can cause muscle strain, leading to pain and stiffness in the neck.
Joint Degeneration.
Just like other joints in the body, the neck joints can wear down with age, leading to pain. Osteoarthritis, in particular, can reduce the cartilage between the vertebrae, which can also contribute to neck pain.
