Dry Needling: What It Is and How It Helps You
At Logan Myotherapy, we specialise in dry needling therapy. Dry needling involves inserting solid, thin needles (as used in acupuncture) into muscle sore spots or trigger points. This helps the muscle relax and return to it’s normal, pain free function.
Unlike acupuncture, which is founded in traditional Chinese medicine and aims to balance the body’s energy flow or “chi”, dry needling is based on Western medicine principles and focuses primarily on the musculoskeletal and nervous system.
Myotherapy dry needling offers a range of benefits such as:
- Fast relief: Science shows dry needling can provide both immediate and sustained pain relief, making it highly effective for muscular pain.
- Pinpoint accuracy: It is incredibly precise, especially for targeting deep muscles like those in the glutes or back.
- Faster healing: It can help accelerate the healing process by increasing blood flow to injured areas.
- Reduced muscle tension: Dry needling can help relax tight muscles and reduce muscle spasms.
A review of 42 studies found dry needling significantly reduces pain and disability for multiple muscular pain conditions. It also provides better short and long-term pain relief than other pain relieving treatments including massage, stretching, conventional rehabilitation, and rolling.
If you’re dealing with persistent muscle pain or movement limitations that haven’t responded well to other treatments, dry needling could be the solution you’ve been looking for.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is dry needling for everyone?
Although dry needling offers a range of benefits from fast pain relief and improved mobility to enhanced athletic performance, it is not for everyone. People with certain medical conditions, such as bleeding disorders or needle phobia, may not be suitable for needling. For those clients, we provide alternative treatment techniques to ensure effective care.
Is dry needling painful?
The sensation experienced during treatment can vary from person to person. Some feel a prick or twitch. Others feel nothing. The insertion of the needle into a trigger point can cause a brief cramping sensation or muscle twitch, described as a positive response that indicates the release of tension.
Are there any side affects from dry needling?
Common side effects may include:
- Temporary soreness, bruising, or minor bleeding at the needle insertion site. These side effects are usually mild and subside quickly.
- Some people feel tired, nauseous, emotional, or ‘out of it’ which is a short term reaction lasting no more than a hour or two.
- Treatment can “temporarily” make the condition worse.
- Serious complications are rare but can include infection, nerve irritation, or allergic reaction.
How long are appointments?
Allow 45-60 mins for your initial appointment which includes your assessment and treatment. Subsequent sessions are typically 30 minutes but some conditions may require longer.
Should I book online or call?
You can do either, but if the time you want is not available on the online booking system, give us a call as there may be some appointments available that are not showing online.
Can I claim Private Health Rebates?
Yes. You can claim rebates for dry needling provided you have Myotherapy or Remedial Massage included in your extras. We have a HICAPS machine to claim instant rebates from your health insurer. For self claiming purposes we email an invoice.
What do I wear?
Wear loose, comfortable clothing such as shorts, tracksuit pants, singlets or t-shirts. No tight fitting cloths such as jeans.
How many appointments will I need?
The number of follow up appointments needed will be dependent on the severity of your condition and your response to dry needling treatment. We will only see you for the minimum number of sessions needed to get rid of your pain. On average we see our patients 3 – 6 times.
